January 8, 2008 on 10:49 am | In Cruises, travel | 1 CommentWe have returned home and I wanted to do some final commenting on our cruise. It was a very enjoyable cruise with visits to several beautiful islands. I have come to the conclusion that most of the Caribbean Islands are more for people who are water and beach people. We found many passengers who never got off the ship in some of the ports – they have been there and they have done that. I also personally will no longer do shore excursions with the cruise lines. When I have done a visit on my own to a Caribbean Island I get much more information and see much more that I have ever with any of the cruise shore excursions and it really doesn’t seem to matter which cruise line it is on. For me the opportunity to lay in the sun and enjoy the warm Caribbean breezes is what I want from a cruise.
The entertainment on board was spectacular as I have oted before the piano player in Micharel’s Club – Perry Grant was delightful funny and entertaining. The productions shows wer great and the quality of performers was definitely Broadway level.
I did find a great amount of English and Scottish, and other Europeans. This made the late seating very crowded which is unusual for a Caribben cruise. I did not take many pictures but will put a few on the gallery page of my site in the next week or so.
St Lucia and Sint Maarten
January 5, 2008 on 4:19 am | In Celebrity Cruise, Cruises, travel | No CommentsToday is really January 4, 2008 I have discovered that the time is taken from whatever satellite we are connected through and they are several hours ahead of us – I do know what day it is but sometimes the post shows that it is the next day. Yesterday the 3rd we spent in St Lucia and had a bit of a not wonderful shoe excursion. I have come to the conclusion that I can get of a boat and take a taxi and have a better tour and shore excursion than I can through the cruise line – not just Celebrity that I am on but on many others that I have been on. I have been to St Lucia before but did not see much of it and wanted to yesterday unfortunately we ended up not seeing anything new and having difficulty while doing that. Today on Sint Maarten we elected to spend the day at the beach. I have been to this island several times and have seen about as much as you can see so it was good to have a day at the beach. We will spend the next two days at sea playing trivia, music trivia and sitting by the pool and reading a lot. Joe is on his third book so this has been relaxing for him, I am still reading my first that is 983 pages long so if I can finish it I will be happy. We are dining later tonight at Ocean Liners the speciality restaurant so I will report on that tomorrow.
Barbados
January 3, 2008 on 5:18 am | In Celebrity Cruise, Cruises, travel | No CommentsToady we were at the eastern most island of the Caribbean, Barbados. One of the better Islands in the Caribbean, Tiger Woods was married here and has a house this was one of the islands that Princess Diana used to come to. It has a strong history and was once a British Colony and reminds me a little of Bermuda. We did a tour and saw a distillery, old sugar plantation house (wall 13 feet thick) and a mahogany factory, not for furniture but for hand made pieces and decorative items. Returned to the ship around noon and elected to spend the remainder of the day at the pool. Just finished dinner and are off to see the show a combination of singer and the acrobatic couple we have seen before. Tomorrow we are going to St Lucia and doing a tour to various artists on the island.
Day at Sea
January 2, 2008 on 12:56 am | In Celebrity Cruise, Cruises, travel | No CommentsToday the start of 2008 and we have spent it relaxing at sea. Last night our gala evening bringing in the new year was spent in Michael’s Club following a spectacular show in the Celebrity Theater. The lead singer was on the search for the starts of Grease the Broadway play, he has a spectacular voice and it really great to hear and see his performance. There also was a couple performing on what I can only call drapes – similar to a Cirque type of performance. Our evening ended in Michael’s club with Perry leading the way in celebration and song. Today after a bit of sleeping in we have been poolside all day but made a few stops at trivia and name that tune contest. There was a brief period of rain that the captain quickly got us through and then sunshine the rest of the day. Today is informal and we expect a quiet night although I might try my luck in the casino again. I came in 4th in the blackjack tournament – no money of course. We have signed up for the Luggage valet that Celebrity is now offering and donot have to worry about picking up our suitcase in the customs shed. We will put them out the last night and see them the next day hopefully in Cleveland. For now we are sailing for Barbados.
