October 26, 2011
Today we start the grand adventure to Italy for a week and then off to our cruise. We of course had a glitch leaving the US – our plane had engine trouble and so we left an hour late. This of course left us missing the connection in Frankfurt. Instead of a 45 minute connection we had a 4 hour connection and si were able to see more of the airport. I was very surprised that the airport and services did not have the efficiency I have found previously in Germany. While they automatically booked us on the next flight it took us 4 different locations to finally get our boarding passes for our new flight and that was all the way back at normal check in, but eventually we were off on a very crowded flight to Venice. We picked up our cars and headed off to the villa.

Italy and the Holyland Cruise

Well packing is finished paper is stopped and tomorrow we off on our Grand Adventure.   Departure for Venice where we will spend 7 night at the Villa Murano.  It looks lovely, this is not high season and we expect it to be a little cool but not much different than here except that the weather report is for rain.  We have plans for visits to several different areas in the north of Italy and I will keep you posted as I am able.  Not sure what kind of wifi or internet hook up will be availaible at the villa.  Look for more in the next couple days.

Oasis of the Seas Final Post

It has taken me some time to get this done as I wanted to make the pictures available to any who are interested in seeing some of the areas of the Oasis of the Seas from a regular person camera perspective.   You can go to Oasis of the Seas and view the gallery of pictures posted.  Now some final observations regarding Oasis of the Seas.

Surprisingly my husband and I enjoyed this cruise far more that we thought we would. I know that we did not get to all parts of the ship but we certainly saw enough.  I would recommend this ship for any age bracket with the qualification that if you have trouble walking then I would rent a scooter for the week to assist in getting around.  I saw many onboard and they clearly helped.  There is so much to do for all age groups.  The Entertainment Area and Royal Promenade are full of a wide variety of places to stop and have a little libation.  Some of the lounges and bars have smoking areas and I must say that the exhaust systems were fantastic.  We particularly enjoyed the Globe and Atlas Pub on the royal Promenade, the Schooner Bar on Deck 6 above the Royal Promenade, and for a quiet spot the Trellis Bar in Central Park.

The concept of ‘neighborhoods’ truly does allow for a more personalized cruise and reduces some of the congestion felt on large cruise ships.  I wish you happy sailing on whatever cruise you choose.

RCCL Oasis of the Seas Day 7 January 28

Today is our last day on board – it is a day at sea. I spent the morning in class with other travel agents learning about what is new and happening with the ships of RCCL. We are packing now and will have dinner tonight at Giovanni’s restaurant with friends we met on board. I am posting this now and will have one final blog with a general overview of the ship – food, entertainment, ship itself, rooms etc.
Off the ship tomorrow very early and then home I hope.

RCCL Oasis of the Seas Thursday January 27

Today we are in Cozumel Mexico and again we are not going ashore, I can see there are 3 other ships in port along with us – that would make well over 10000 people ashore – way too crowded. I had a mini massage, facial and other stuff for a reduced rate because it is a port day and they had a sale. We then relaxed playing Trivia 3 times – never winning of course but fun meeting different people. We came back to our room and dressed for dinner then had a drink on the balcony as we watched the other ships leave port until it go too dark to sit out there. Weather was not real good, warm and cloudy and definitely better than the 28 degrees we heard about in Cleveland. We again had late dinner in the dinning room and then on to a show. The show last night was “Come Fly with Me” an extravaganza of aerialist, dancers, and singers. Really spectacular similar to a Circque type show.
Stopped in at the pub to hear Ian Miller sing before off to bed.

RCCL Oasis of the Seas Wednesday January 26

While we did not go to it there was a Quest show last night which is one of the really funny events that happen on a cruise ship.
This has been a very relaxing cruise not having to get up to be off the ship for any reason. Today the ship is calling a Costa Maya arriving around noon and staying until 6 or 7. We have elected not to get off at all so will head for the Pool or Solarium following breakfast again at Johnny Rockets. We opted for the pool and were there about an hour when the rains came down so we moved to the Solarium which is partly covered, quieter and peaceful and adults only (supposedly?)
Now about the parade; this takes place once a cruise and is really worth seeing I have some pictures but they don’t do it justice. The Lollapaloozas Parade takes place on the Royal Promenade – it was scheduled for 12:30, we went down about 12 to find no place to sit at all. I would recommend finding a spot at one of the many bars and restaurants along the Royal Promenade and waiting it out because it really is worth seeing. The entertainment staff puts it on including musicians, singers and dancers but for this they are all dancing. And parading around the Promenade. There are aerialist doing stunts up in the air above the promenade and all sorts of action taking place. Music is table and loud but a lot of fun to watch.
The remainder of the day has not been very nice with lots of clouds and some rain. We ate lunch in the Solarium Bistro the “healthy food” place after the parade and everyone got off the ship then relaxed for the rest of the afternoon.

The evening had us again at late seating then with our table mates we headed to the Royal Promenade again for the 70’s Song Tribute and Disco Street Party another huge event on the Royal Promenade and this one is even louder and more active. This turns the Royal Promenade into a street party with everyone dancing, singing and drinking. We ended the evening in the Pub listening to Ian Miller with his guitar playing pub songs.

RCCL Oasis of the Seas Tuesday January 25

A day at sea and the sun is shinning, it is hot a great day to bake in the sun.
My goal this trip is to try out as many of the eating areas as I can. So today we went to Johnny Rockets for Breakfast – this is a place located in the Boardwalk area and they charge for lunch and dinner but not for breakfast. They do cook eggs your way, and also have French toast and pancakes. Not a bad place to go for breakfast and you can sit outside or in and while it is in the middle of the ship it is open to the sky. We headed for the pool and our chairs which we had already staked out. Different on this ship pool towels are available but you have to check them out with your room card/key and turn them back in or be charged $25.00 per towel. Your can check out up to 2 towels per card.
Spent the day in the sun except for a visit to the windjammer café for lunch and not thrilled with it, Again a disappointment not much variety – one kind of soup, cold cuts, hamburger hot dogs and a salad bar and a few hot items.

We lasted until about 3 in the sun and then went in to shower and change. The activities around are very good throughout the day and there is always something to do if you want. Around 5 there was a general trivia game which Joe and I joined. We teamed up with a 20’s something couple from Chicago and 40”s something couple from Toronto and ended up winning the game just a good mix of people and experiences. After we headed down to thee Pizza shop for a snack open almost all the time and then back to our room for a rest before late dinner. We are at late seating so dinner is at 830, I sometimes feel that your miss more stuff when you have late seating especially if you are not a night owl. The entertainment tonight was “The Texas Tenors” of America’s got Talent and they were excellent. They are the headliners for this voyage and will appear again tomorrow.
We are off to bed – tomorrow is a day in Costa Maya we are not getting off but will spend the day in the solarium.

RCCL Oasis of the Sea Monday January 24

Day 3 We slept in today so by the time we got up the only place for breakfast was the Windjammer Café, what a disappointment – no cook to order egg station! Food was not real warm and toasted bread pilled on a tray getting soggy and no place to eat outside. I was not impressed and intend to check out some other options for breakfast. Today is our beach day in Labadee, Haiti this is a very secure controlled place and much improved place since I was last here. There is a dock and so it is much easier getting on and off at will. We headed to the beach taking a little ferry from the dock to one of the beaches available. Interesting and kind of strange the ferry only goes one way – probably because in order to get the tram back to the boat you have to go through the native market place so beware if you are stopping here.

We saw a really great show last night called the Aqua Dreams – full of people diving from towers, synchronized swimmers, gymnast, and trampoline people. It was difficult to really tell which ones were the specialist in each as everyone participated in most aspects of the show. Really a spectacular event and worth seeing – another show that does not cost but does require reservations. From the show we went to the dining room for dinner stopped in the Schooner lunge after and listened to Paul Oshea on the piano for some sing-along – a good group lost of fun. Then off to bed. Tomorrow is a day at sea and we will spend it by the pool.

RCCL Oasis of the Sea Sunday January 23, 2011

Before going to our first day at sea I want to mention the boarding process. We arrived at the pier about 11;30am and were able to check in and get right on board. We could not go to our cabin until 1PM but that was ok we sat and had a drink at the bar in Central Park. The bartender is a really nice girl Carlena from Chili who we enjoyed talking with. We did not do much except walk around the ship there is after all a lot to see. We met our fellow travel people at a cocktail party, had dinner, late seating and retired early since we had a busy day with training most of the day.

Sunday and our first day out is a day at sea and that is good because it will take time to figure out this ship. For the most of the day I was in a class and learning about Royal Caribbean and what is new. We did attend the Cruise Critic Meet and Greet, this one is sponsored by Royal Caribbean. Interesting to see people you only interacted with on line. Late afternoon Joe and I took time to explores some of the shops and then watched the football game before going on to the Ice show which we had reservation for. A few words about the shows on board – there are several Ice, Water, Broadway, and Comedy. You do need to make reservations but there is no charge. Reservations are needed because most of the show venues are not as large as the show rooms on many other ships. So Sunday evening before dinner we saw the ice show Frozen in Time. This is a 45 minute show built around the dreams of Hans Christian Anderson, I would strongly recommend it and it is really a treat to see ice skating while sailing the Caribbean.
Following the show we headed for Central Park and a visit with Carlene our favorite bartender before going to Giovanni’s for dinner. This is one of the speciality restaurants and there is a charge with an Italian theme. The food and service were very good and we were able to finish our meal with Lemon cello definitely a treat. We headed off to the Viking Crown Lounge for some classic music listening, always nice to sit in a lounge at the top of the ship while gliding through the water as your day winds down.

Saturday January 22,2011 Oasis

RCCL – Oasis ot the Sea – I am sitting on the balcony in Port Everglades enjoying a glass of wine looking out at a Carnival Cruise Ship, 2 Holland America Ships and one Princcess and let me tell you this one tops them all for size. We have been on board for about 2 hours and have seen only about 1/4th of the ship. She is a lovely lady but really really big (maybe too big) – The promenade deck is full of life with shops for stuff and food up and down both sides some you pay for some not. The Central Park Area is an area of elegance – calm and quiet. The boardwalk area is full of life with lots to do and lots to eat all of which is not included I hope to be a able to post some pictures but need to figure out how first.
The weather is not wonderful but compared to Cleveland 72 and cloudy is not bad. We sail at 5PM with muster at 415PM but I hear no life vest are required which is good. Meeting people from Cruise Critic after muster at the Sky Bar for Sail Away! Look for more tomorrow but I have training 9AM to 4PM so may not be until Monday. Still waiting for luggage!!!!!
